I am deeply attracted to both Moss Agate and Tree Agate, whenever I’m sourcing for gemstones, I always gravitate to these two types of crystals (although I do prefer Tree Agates a little more). To the undiscerning eye, it can be slightly confusing in identifying between Moss vs Tree Agate, however I’m going to give you two easy tips that will help you correctly identify between these two crystals every single time.
Tip #1 – identify by base color
When you put these two crystals side by side, it’s the easiest way to identify which is which. Moss Agate usually has a deep green base color with translucent inclusions in a moss light pattern. Where as Tree Agates usually will have a white base color with green inclusions in a tree branching pattern.
Tip #2 – identify by pattern
As mentioned in tip #1, both stones will have different patten variations. Like its name, Moss Agate’s patterns are…well moss like! The mossy shapes will fanout over the entire stone, and will appear clear or translucent. Tree Agate’s patterns also speak to its name sake, the vines are in a branchlike pattern with different green color intensity, representing a mini forest in this stone.
Aside from their physical appearance, even though these are both Agates, they do have different healing properties. In chakra practice, Moss Agates are used to target the heart chakra, where as Tree Agate is used to open up both the heart and root chakra.
In healing, Moss Agate is used to nourish your inner growth to help you discover your life’s purpose. It strengthens your willpower and restores your vitality, giving you energy and ambition to take on the day ahead.
Tree Agate on the other hand instills stability, inner peace, and has a strong connection to earth’s energy. Being a fervent gardener, and lover of nature, this is probably why I have such a strong connection to this stone. In fact I wear a Tree Agate bracelet everyday!
