Fossilized wood, also known as petrified wood, is wood that has turned into stone through the process of permineralization. This occurs when all the organic materials are replaced with minerals, most commonly silica, while retaining the original structure of the wood. Over millions of years, the wood becomes fossilized, transforming into a solid, rock-like material that often preserves detailed features of the bark, wood, and cellular structures. Petrified wood is valued both as a gemstone and for its scientific significance in studying ancient plant life.
